Society of the Miter

The Society of the Miter was formed in 1994 by the Most Reverend Thomas J. O'Brien to commemorate the 25th Anniversary of the Charity and Development Appeal (CDA) and to recognize those families and individuals who offer leadership gifts to the annual appeal.

The Miter is worn by the bishop and symbolizes his leadership and stewardship of the Diocese. The design on the Society's Miter is the symbol of the Diocese of Phoenix with the phoenix bird rising above Camelback Mountain. The cross above the phoenix is taken from the coat of arms of the Diocese of Tucson, and signifies the historic connection between the two dioceses.

Membership in the Society of the Miter is achieved by making a contribution of $1,000 or more to the CDA. Members of the Society are invited to an annual Dinner of Appreciation with the bishop.

The Shepherd's Circle within the Society of the Miter recognizes those families or individuals who give $5,000 or more to the CDA. Members are invited to an annual Mass and Dinner of Appreciation with the bishop.

Membership in the Society of the Miter and Shepherd’s Circle has grown to over 2,000 who annually contribute over $5.2 million to the CDA. These members have been a major factor in the growth of the Appeal and its ability to meet the increasing needs of our growing Diocese.

In addition, these members provide leadership and set an example of Christian stewardship to others in the Diocese and their parishes.
